|THE ORIGIN OF INNOVATION

The story of Natural Field Supply began in April 1982, in a modest four-tatami-mat dental laboratory nestled within a residentialneighbourhood in Osaka. Today, every product is a one-of-a-kind creation by the company’s founder and representative, Koji Kawamoto, widely recognised as an inventor in the world of nail innovation. We spoke with Mr Kawamoto about the philosophy and passion thatcontinues to shape his approach to craftsmanship.

Q.Your company has maintained an integrated system, overseeingeverything from planning and manufacturing to distribution throughyour own factory. What is the reason for continuing with thisapproach?

A.”My background is in dental technology. While researching dentalprosthetics at Osaka University, I joined a dental materials manufacturer, launching one of Japan’s earliest nail brands. At a large company, even promising ideas had to pass multiple layers of approval, taking almost a year to reach market. The nail industry moves at an extraordinary pace, and I wanted to turn ideas into products immediately. That desire led me to start my own company. In 1994, I obtained a licence to run a small cosmetics packaging business alongside my dental laboratory – the smallest licensed cosmetics facility in Japan at the time. The following year, I converted my home’s ground floor into a fully integrated factory and incorporated the business, building a system where planning, prototyping, manufacturing and refinement could all be done in-house. In the early days, I’d sketch ideas, produce drawings, and carve prototypes by hand, even using them for patents. Today, 3D printers produce samples quickly, but the philosophy hasn’t changed: an idea becomes tangible the moment it comes to mind. We keep our own moulds in-house, so feedback can be acted on immediately – that speed is why we’ve upheld our integrated production system.

Q. Your catalogue now includes nearly 1,500 products. How do these products come into being?

A.Very few of our products are conceived at a desk. In our early days, we imported nail products from overseas, but constantly heard comments from our training schools about missing tools. That feedback became our starting point. At the time, we ran nail schools and salons across Japan. I was treating clients, teaching, and developing products all at once — experiencing every part of the industry myself, so everyday challenges naturally fed into ideas for new development. Our examination products are a good example: there wasn’t an official certification system at the time, but we created them because they were essential for teaching. The same applies to our brushes, files, and finger bowls — all born from genuine needs in day-to-day practice. Today, we draw on feedback from around 120 brand ambassadors, OEM client requests, and staff ideas. Employees increasingly come to me with ideas. My response is usually, “Let’s try it,” and prototyping begins almost immediately. One example is ‘Netcha BOO’ — a cleaner inspired by our factory team that lifts uncured gel while moisturising skin. At Natural Field Supply, every employee is a product developer.

Q.How would Natural Field Supply like to shape the future of the nail industry?

A.Understanding professional practice, education, and manufacturing is how we recognise what the industry truly needs. Our commitment is to create products that don’t yet exist. Many aspects of the industry could still be more convenient and efficient. We want to keep challenging assumptions, turning every thought of “Wouldn’t it be useful if this existed?” into a product, one idea at a time — making nail technicians’ work more comfortable and rewarding, and carrying new standards from Japan to the rest of the world.
