|PHOTOSHOOT NAIL ARTIST

Nori is a nail artist who works on high-end brand advertisements and shows as well as shoots for international fashion magazines. What is the story behind the emergence of a nail artist who transcends the role of a typical salon technician? What does the work entail, and what are the goals for the future?

—What brought you to New York, and how did your journey into photography begin?
I had always been surrounded by people in the creative world such as hair stylists, makeup artists, and photographers so stepping into that world felt like a natural progression. I worked ten years primarily in photo shoots in Japan, but the real turning point came in 2012, when I had the opportunity to be part of a shoot in Tokyo for the March 2013 issue of Vogue US. Artists from all over the world had gathered for the project. It was a ambitious, with hundreds of creatives and crew. I worked with them for several days, and for the first time in my career I got goosebumps. It was all so beautiful, and the level of talent was extraordinary. I felt a desire to see more of what these artists are creating on the world stage. That experience inspired me to make the move to the US.

—What’s the difference between working in the salon and working on set?

In the salon, I work one-on-one with each client, listening closely and making thoughtful suggestions before creating the look together and I really enjoy these conversations. I also pay close attention to the condition of their nails and adjust the products I use accordingly. I believe part of my role is to keep the nails healthy which helps the manicure last, and leave them in the best possible condition. One of the concepts behind the salon is that nail designs should evolve naturally, like your clothes, make-up, or hairstyle. I love incorporating seasonal trends while also blending in each client’s individual taste. On set, the dynamic is completely different. There is a client, a specific purpose, and a clear creative direction making it a collaborative process. You need to work as part of a team, so communication and the ability to make quick decisions are incredibly important. On many international shoots we have a team meeting in the morning and make creative decisions on the spot. In that sense, every shoot is an opportunity to express your creativity. It’s important to be able to articulate what you want to do, and more importantly, why you believe it works so that the rest of the team can get behind your vision. I’m constantly inspired by the artists I work with. Watching their process sparks new ideas which I translate into my own work through nails. I think the key is knowing how to adapt and understand the team while bringing your own ideas to the table. That moment after the shoot, when you see your work in the pages of a magazine or on a billboard somewhere in the city, is when I really feel a sense of accomplishment and remember why I love what I do.

—You’re represented by agencies in both New York and Japan. It’s quite unusual for a nail artist to be represented by an agency, isn’t it?

In New York I’m represented by SEE Management, and in Japan I’m with Ota Office. There seem to be fewer nail artists in Japan working primarily across editorial and commercial, but in New York it’s quite common for nail artists to be represented by agencies. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful agencies in both countries, and for the opportunities and support they’ve given me.

—You also have a beautiful salon in Japan.

This September marks its 15th anniversary. I’ve always loved the location near Omotesando station, and my salon’s interior. As you enter through a nail-shaped arch, the studio opens up into a bright, airy space. For the walls, I chose one of my favorite shade, ‘Dior Gray’, and there is a beautiful mural by Tsuyoshi Hirano. The idea behind the salon is to create a space where clients can feel happy, relaxed, and inspired. Our friendly and talented team operates the salon, but whenever I’m back in Japan I spend as much time as I can working at and evolving my business. We offer gel, traditional nail polish, and Shellac, as well as hand treatments and spa service using special rare products in Japan. Our polish collection is curated primarily around international brands. One of them is Nailberry, a vegan brand from London which is yet to be released in Japan. I often use polish for editorial shoots, but when I’m working with clients – particularly celebrities who prefer natural products – I often opt for vegan colors. For me, the salon is more than just a place to have your nails done, it’s a space where beauty, art, and a sense of joy can come together.

—For shoots, do you usually use polish rather than gel?

For most shoots, I use regular polishes because the color may need to be changed throughout the day. That said, some celebrities and talent prefer gel, so I’m always happy to work with that. I also tailor the length and shape to the creative direction – whether that means an almond, natural, or square. During a shoot, the nails often evolve with the wardrobe, hair and make-up so it’s important to create a look that feels cohesive with the overall image. For jewelry shoots I tend to choose natural shades that allow the jewellery to stand out, while paying just as much attention to the shape and length of the nails. For fashion I reach for trend-driven colors. Fashion brands release new polish shades every season and they naturally have a contemporary quality that works beautifully in editorials. I’ve always loved Chanel’s reds. They have such a sophisticated finish, with an incredible depth and richness of colour. And one product I never go on set without is Kiehl’s body cream. The condition of skin is just as important as the nails on camera. I always keep it in my kit, ready to use quickly.

—Was the language barrier ever a challenge for you?

I’ve always enjoyed learning languages, even when I was a student, so I could already speak some English. The real challenge came after moving to New York. Everyone spoke so quickly, and at first I found it difficult to catch everything. I gradually became more comfortable with English by talking with friends and watching films with subtitles. Over time it became more natural, and I no longer felt held back by the language. These days I can even have those little, everyday conversations and the casual, spontaneous chats that make you feel truly at home.

—Is there anything you’d like to do in the future?

There are so many things. I want to continue introducing the latest techniques, trends, and innovations from around the world to Japan, while also challenging myself with things I’ve never done before. Recently, I’ve been hearing from Japanese manicurist who want to bring new international products we carry at Salon N into their own salons. I’d love to continue discovering products from abroad and sharing them with the Japanese nail community, as well as meeting more nail artists who aspire to work on set. I’m currently looking for talented manicurists to join my team, working across a wide range of projects – from shoots in Japan and overseas to salon work, celebrity clients, and events. If that sounds like you, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out anytime by email or DM. I look forward to meeting you.
