近年ミニサイズのネイルプロダクトが増えている。あえて小さくする理由、開発の背景、今後の展望などミニサイズプロダクトを展開している12社に伺った。取材をもとに、これからの商材の未来を考える。

In recent years, miniature nail products have become increasingly popular. We spoke with 12 brands offering mini-sized products to explore why they’ve chosen to make them smaller, the thinking behind their development, and their vision for the future. Drawing on these interviews, we take a closer look at what this growing trend could mean for the future of nail products.

　ネイル商材の大きさや容量がミニ化する理由として、量を使わない、置くスペースがないなどのセルフネイラー向けに販売されているのかと思いきや、近年、メーカー各社が相次いでプロ向けにミニサイズ商材の開発・発売に力を入れているという。プロネイルアーティストの間で需要が高まっているのだ。一体なぜなのか。

　取材を進めると、その流れは2016年頃から徐々に始まり、2021年以降に一気に加速したことが見えてきた。背景にはコロナ禍によるセルフネイル市場の拡大だけではない。メーカー各社が口を揃えて挙げたのは、プロネイルアーティストから寄せられたリアルな現場の声だった。「新色は導入したい。でも、お客様にどれだけ需要があるかわからない」「個人サロンなので予算も収納スペースも限られている」「イベントや出張施術では荷物をできるだけ小さく軽くしたい」。こうしたニーズを受け、多くのメーカーがミニサイズ展開をしたという。

　これまで市場では、大容量でコストパフォーマンスに優れた製品や、高出力・高性能を実現する機器が“プロ仕様”の象徴だった。その価値観を覆すには、「小さいけれど性能は妥協しない」という新たな技術開発が必要だったのである。特にライトや集塵機といった機器類では、単純に外装を小型化するだけでは成立しない。照射力や吸引力を維持しながら静音性や耐久性まで確保するため、内部構造を一から見直す必要があったという。毎日のサロンワークで酷使される道具だからこそ、コンパクトでありながら通常サイズと変わらない使い心地を実現するための研究開発が各社で重ねられてきた。

　現在では、カラージェルやネイルオイルといった消耗品だけでなく、ファイル、マシン、ライト、集塵機まで、ネイル商材全般でミニサイズ化が進んでいる。例えば、カラーは流行の移り変わりが早く、大容量では使い切れずに期限切れとなり、廃棄してしまうケースも少なくない。ミニサイズなら初期投資を抑えながら気軽に新色を導入でき、廃棄ロスも最小限に抑えられる。

　限られたスペースで営業する個人サロンでは、省スペース化そのものが大きなメリットとなる。さらに、出張ネイルやイベントでのデモンストレーション、フット施術用、結婚式やライブなどイベント前のお直し用として道具を持ち運ぶとなるとミニサイズの方が都合が良い。

　また、ネイリストの働き方の変化も大きく影響していると考えられる。近年はフリーランスや副業ネイルアーティスト、シェアサロン利用者など、固定店舗を持たずに活動するスタイルが増加しつつある。こうした新しい働き方では、持ち運びやすく、省スペースで高性能な機材が重宝されるのだ。かつては“大容量”や“長く使えること”が価値だった。しかし今は、コストパフォーマンスやタイムパフォーマンス、省スペース、さらには廃棄ロスの削減など“必要なものを、必要な分だけ”という現代の価値観が、ネイル商材のあり方そのものを変え始めているのだ。

　ミニサイズ商材の拡大は、単なる商品の小型化ではない。多様化するネイルワークスタイルに合わせた進化であり、ネイルアーティストの働き方を支える新しいスタンダードへの変化と言えるだろう。今後もメーカー各社からは、ミニサイズに限らず、それぞれのサロンスタイルや施術環境に寄り添った新しい商材が生まれていくはずだ。その進化は、ネイル業界の未来を映すひとつの指標になるのかもしれない。

At first glance, it might seem that smaller-sized nail products are designed primarily for home users – those who use less product or simply don’t have the space to store larger bottles and equipment. However, an increasing number of manufacturers are now investing in the development of mini-sized products specifically for professionals. Demand is growing rapidly, but why?

Our interviews revealed that the trend began to emerge around 2016, before accelerating from 2021 onwards. While the expansion of the home manicure market during the pandemic undoubtedly contributed, every manufacturer we spoke to highlighted the same driving force: genuine feedback from professional nail artists working in salons.

“I’d love to introduce the latest colours, but I don’t know how much demand there’ll be from my clients.”
“As an independent salon, my budget and storage space are both limited.”
“For mobile appointments and events, I want my kit to be as compact and lightweight as possible.”

Responding to these practical concerns, many brands began expanding their ranges of mini-sized products.

For many years, professional-grade products were synonymous with larger volumes, outstanding value for money and powerful, high-performance equipment. Redefining that standard required a new approach to product development – creating tools that are smaller without compromising performance.

This challenge was particularly effective for equipment such as curing lamps and dust collectors. But simply reducing the size of the casing wasn’t enough. To maintain curing power or suction while ensuring quiet operation and long-term durability, manufacturers had to completely redesign the internal structure. These are tools that technicians rely on during a busy salon day, so considerable research and engineering have gone into creating compact equipment that delivers the same experience as full-sized models.

Today, miniaturisation extends far beyond consumables such as colour gels and nail oils. Files, e-files, curing lamps and dust collectors are all now available in compact versions. Colour products, for example, are especially suited to this shift. Trends change quickly, and larger bottles often expire before they can be used up, resulting in unnecessary waste. Mini-sized products make it easier to introduce new shades with a lower initial investment while keeping product loss to a minimum.

Compact products also offer clear advantages for independent salons where storage space is at a premium. They’re equally practical for mobile nail services, live demonstrations, pedicure treatments, or carrying equipment for touch-ups before weddings, concerts and other events.

The shifting work-landscape for nail artists has also played an important role. Many professionals now work as freelancers, run nail businesses alongside other careers, or operate from shared salon spaces rather than permanent premises. For these working styles, lightweight, portable and space-efficient equipment with professional-level performance has become increasingly valuable.

In the past, bigger quantities and long-lasting products were seen as the benchmark of value. Today, priorities have shifted. Cost efficiency, time efficiency, space-saving design and reducing product waste all reflect a modern mindset of using only what is needed, when it’s needed. That shift is beginning to redefine what professional nail products should be.

The growth of mini-sized products is therefore about much more than simply making products smaller. It represents an evolution driven by increasingly diverse ways of working and signals a new standard for supporting professional nail artists. As the industry continues to evolve, manufacturers are likely to develop not only more compact products, but also tools tailored to a wider variety of salon environments and working styles. In many ways, these innovations may become one of the clearest indicators of where the future of the nail industry is headed.
